About us

This marks the spot on the embankment through which several thousands of soldiers disembarked, in their defence of the city. During much of the Battle of Stalingrad, the Red Army controlled less than 20% of the city along the west side of the River Volga. The defence of the city was shored up by reinforcements ferried in by barge across the river. Most crucial and best known are the 13 Guards Division, which arrived on the 14 September 1942, the very critical day when the Axis forces almost captured the whole west bank of the river.
